Pictures of the world and the grid
A map is a picture that leaves most things out on purpose. Four projection families: planar (one hemisphere / pole), cylindrical (whole world, poles stretch), conical (mid-latitudes), compromise (a little of everything, Robinson oval).

Latitude first (north/south of the equator), then longitude (east/west of Greenwich). Course check from 1.3.1: 30° N, 90° W is New Orleans. Special lines: tropics about 23.5°, polar circles about 66.5°. Cancer and Arctic are north. Capricorn and Antarctic are south.

Humans still make maps. Leaps in the 15th–16th centuries and the 20th century. Match dates if asked: Mercator 1569, Robinson 1963, Columbus 1492, Piri Reis 1513, Ptolemy 150.

People, then a 16th-century problem
The Mapmakers essay is a secondary source about the 1500s. Accuracy depends on instruments, knowledge of Earth and sky, number of observations, math, and skill. They agreed to lat/long in the 16th century. Latitude they could measure (sun or Polaris). Longitude needed a clock (Harrison 1773). Workaround: dead reckoning and parallel sailing, trusting the cross-staff.

Bias, then GIS
Bias is a lean, not always a crime. Maps cannot include everything. Validity = does it do the job it was made for. A world map that is bad at finding a street is not invalid as a world map. The 1929 Surrealist map is valid as a view, not as a size chart. Never trust a single map on something important.

Bias, then GIS
GIS: high-tech, computers, spatially organized information. Landsat = NASA remote-sensing satellites. Four data sources (cameras, Landsat, bar codes, environmental instruments). EMS spider diagram. GIS is not the same letters as GPS.

Bias vs validity is the pair people mix up. A biased map can still be valid. GIS vs GPS is the other pair.
